Price roll waste in euros per week, not in a demo percentage.

A vendor shows 94% fill on a pretty shape. The shop has a 2.4 m remnant nobody will use, an 8 mm gutter “to be safe”, and an operator who will not rotate pieces because “that is how yesterday ran”. This piece is a spreadsheet, not a slide.

Updated 28 August 2026. NestPrintCut editorial — the team that builds RolCut. Scores follow the public method. We do not run a 200-roll lab we have not run.

A formula that fits on a card

Waste (€/week) ≈ (metres of roll consumed − metres covered by pieces) × €/m. Count piece metres on the frame or the contour — be consistent. Add remnants below your threshold (e.g. < 1.5 m goes in the bin) and reprints after a bad spot.

  1. Write down the media price per running metre (not per m² if you buy rolls).
  2. For a week: the length of every roll leaving the nest.
  3. Sum of piece areas (or contours) / media width = “metres used”.
  4. Difference × price. Separately: rolls that went in the bin after a bad contour.

Where the metre goes that the nest “does not see”

  • A 10 mm gutter instead of 4 mm, because someone once had a lifted liner.
  • No 90° rotation on canvases that fit the width.
  • A rectangle on contour stickers.
  • Marks and piece codes with no recipe — every job different.
  • A remnant “too short for the next 3 metres”.
When the software pays backIf a week of waste > 1/12 of the yearly licence, the tool conversation is over. At €22/m and 8 wasted metres a week, RolCut (€499) returns in three weeks. PrimeCenter Pro returns when those metres are larger or when you also price an hour of prepress.

What not to do

Do not compare a vendor demo percentage to the percentage on your roll. Different shapes, different kerf, different operator. Your own week of measurement is the only number you may use when you pick from the ranking.

Questions

Is 5% better nesting visible on the invoice?

On a roll — yes, if you count metres. On one board — often not. That is why this site is about rolls.

Does RolCut show cost per metre?

Yes, in the shop recipe: waste, metres, cost per piece. Not magic — the same arithmetic as above.
