Nest on a roll. Not on a page with a “roll” checkbox.

Most “nesting software” in Google packs a 4×8 sheet or an A4. A wide-format shop has a roll: width is fixed, length is cheap until waste eats a metre. That is a different compute problem and a different file out.

Updated 28 August 2026. NestPrintCut editorial — the team that builds RolCut. Scores follow the public method. We do not run a 200-roll lab we have not run.

If the operator says “nest it” and opens Corel to nudge 14 wallpapers onto 159 cm, you do not have roll-nesting software. You have an editor and hope. The difference shows at the end of the roll, not on a slide.

What a program must do to be called roll nesting

  1. Media width is the first dimension. 137, 152, 159, 160, 320 cm — not “custom sheet”.
  2. Roll length is an output, not a “page height” cap.
  3. Kerf and gutters count along the feed, not only inside a frame.
  4. Output is a print sheet the length of the nest, not an A0 collage.
  5. Waste is metres and money, not “85% utilization” with no film price.

Rectangles on a roll vs shapes on a roll

Wallpaper, roll-ups, canvas on bars — rectangles. The winner is the tool that does not leave 8 cm of air above every piece and will rotate 90° when the width fits. Stickers, moto kits, built-up letters — shapes. A bounding box on a roll is more expensive than on a board, because air multiplies by metres, not by one sheet.

What a wasted metre is worth

Price your film. €18–28 per running metre at 152–160 cm is not exotic. Five spare centimetres per job, twenty jobs a week, fifty weeks: 50 m × €22 = €1,100. That is more than a year of RolCut and less than a month of PrimeCenter Max. Use your number — the formula stays.

The RIP already nests — rectanglesCalderaRIP, Onyx, Ergosoft will pack boxes. Shops buy PrimeCenter, TruFit or a separate nester when shape starts eating media. Do not confuse “we nest in the RIP” with true-shape on a roll.

What to pick if the problem is the roll, not prepress

When the bottleneck is the layout and cut.pdf, not a 200-file hot-folder queue — use the shop board. When prepress is a job title and a script — PrimeCenter. Separate guides: a Caldera stand-in, and CutContour.

Questions

Is board nesting the same software as roll nesting?

Sometimes, if the tool treats a board as a roll with a finite length. Often not — a sheet nester caps length to the board and never prices a running metre.

Can Corel nest on a roll?

By hand, yes. eCut adds an engine. You still live in a CDR, not in print.pdf + cut.pdf upstream of the RIP.

First nest this afternoon, not after training.

7 days on the full RolCut plan, no card. print.pdf + cut.pdf + cut.dxf. €49/mo or €499/year.
